Technology at Houston Academy

Technology is a powerful, transformational tool in 21st-century education, and at Houston Academy, we use it to enhance learning at every level. Aligned with our mission and Strategic Plan, we integrate state-of-the-art technology throughout our curriculum to provide students with an unparalleled learning experience.

Since launching our 1:1 technology initiative in 2012, we’ve provided students in kindergarten through fourth grade with iPads and students in grades 5–12 with MacBook laptops. Through this program, we ensure age-appropriate, responsible use of technology that supports learning in every division.

In addition to MacBooks and iPads, our students and classrooms are equipped with:

  • Google Workspace for Education (Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, Gmail, Drive, Classroom)

  • Interactive Promethean Panels

  • Document Cameras

  • Digital Microscopes

  • Pasco Probeware

  • Curriculum-Based Software

  • Educational Apps

Technology in the Curriculum-Lower School

Our Lower School STEAM program in grades kindergarten through fourth grade is designed to build a strong foundation in technology by teaching essential skills through Google Suite, Digital Citizenship, Research and Information Literacy, and Robotics and Coding. Students learn to navigate and use Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Canva, and other tools to communicate, collaborate, and create digital content. Digital Citizenship lessons help students understand how to use technology responsibly and safely. Through guided research and information literacy activities, they learn to ask questions, evaluate sources, and synthesize information effectively.

Robotics and coding introduce students to programming concepts and logical thinking in a fun, hands-on way using Dash Robots from Wonder and Lego Education Spike Prime sets. Instruction is rooted in the engineering design process and problem-based learning, empowering students to identify challenges, brainstorm solutions, test ideas, and reflect on their results—developing both their technical skills and problem-solving abilities.

Technology in the Curriculum-Middle/Upper School

Houston Academy offers a wide range of innovative and engaging courses in 5th-12th grades to prepare students for the digital world. Our required fifth grade STEAM course builds on the concepts and skills students began learning in Lower School. Technology 6 ensures our students master the digital skills needed in the upper grades and beyond. A variety of elective technology courses are offered in grades 7-12, including:

Beyond the Classroom

At Houston Academy, technology education doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Our Upper School students extend their learning through high-level competition on both our state-level Robotics Team and Computer Science Team, showcasing their skills in areas such as website design, computer graphics, digital video production, programming, and multimedia development.

We are proud to offer these dynamic, hands-on experiences that reflect our deep commitment to equipping students with the tools, skills, and mindset needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Professional Development

At Houston Academy, we believe that technology is most effective when paired with expert, forward-thinking instruction. That’s why we’re proud to have a dedicated Technology Team of three full-time staff members who support the ongoing growth and development of our faculty.

Our Tech Team provides on-campus training, personalized support, and access to off-campus professional development opportunities that help teachers stay ahead of the curve in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Whether it's through full-day in-service programs, after-school workshops, or one-on-one coaching, our team ensures faculty are equipped with the latest tools, software, and instructional strategies.

Thanks to this strong foundation of support, our educators confidently leverage technology to create dynamic, interactive learning environments that foster collaboration, accommodate diverse learning styles, and prepare students for success in the future.
