Our History

Houston Academy was founded in the fall of 1969 when a group of twelve visionary leaders came together to create a new kind of educational experience in Dothan, Alabama. They chartered the school under the name Southeast Education, Incorporated, with the goal of building an independent college preparatory school focused on academic excellence and character development.

Construction of the school’s first campus was completed in 1970, and Houston Academy officially opened its doors that September with 283 students. Just over a year later, in November 1971, the school earned full accreditation from the Alabama State Department of Education. By its seventh year, enrollment had grown to over 550 students—proof of the community’s strong support and the school’s growing reputation.

Values & Vision

In 1972, Houston Academy adopted its first mascot: a spirited dog named Raider. That same Raider spirit continues to inspire students today, symbolizing pride, resilience, and school unity.

Now in 2025, Houston Academy is home to more than 730 students in preschool through 12th grade. As the only SAIS (Southern Association of Independent Schools) accredited independent school in the Wiregrass region, we remain committed to offering a dynamic, well-rounded education that emphasizes academics, the arts, athletics, and service. Our graduates are now making an impact across the country and around the world.

Though much has changed since 1969, Houston Academy stays true to the values and vision of its founders. Their legacy lives on in every classroom, on every field, and in every student we prepare for the future.
