How to Apply
We are pleased that you have shown an interest in Houston Academy for the education of your child.
This checklist will be helpful in guiding you through the admissions process. Please remember it is the responsibility of each applicant’s parent or guardian to ensure that all required information is submitted. The applicant’s file must be complete before it will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Application/Test Fee
Submit the online application and mail or deliver a $75.00 check made payable to Houston Academy, 901 Buena Vista Drive, Dothan, Alabama 36303. The $75.00 is a non-refundable fee that activates the application and covers the cost of testing. This fee will carry over to the next year if the applicant is not offered a contract. At the end of that year the application will be considered inactive, and the student will be required to start a new application.
Checklist of Required Academic Records and Documents
The following information should be collected by the parent or guardian to upload as part of the online application for all applicants:
- Birth Certificate
- State of Alabama Immunization Record
- Psychological, behavioral and/or speech records (if applicable)
Applicants for Grades 5K – 12 must also submit the following:
- Progress Reports
- Report Card (most recent)
- Transcript
- Standardized Achievement Test Results (most recent)
- Middle and Upper School Applicants are required to complete and upload a Student Profile.
Academic Reference Forms
- The applicant should submit the Houston Academy Reference Form (available below) to their current classroom teacher(s) for completion. The parent must fill out and sign the top of each form. Teachers should email references to Nicole Lisenby, Director of Admissions, at lisenbyn@houstonacademy.com or fax them to 334-793-4053. References will not be accepted unless they are sent directly from the teacher who completes the form.

Testing
Testing is not required for students who apply for 3P or 4P. Parents of applicants in 5K – Grade 2 will be contacted by the Director of Admissions to schedule an individual testing appointment when the completed application has been received. Students who apply for Grades 3 – 12 will test for admission on Saturday, February 26, 2022. Applicants must successfully complete and pass achievement tests in reading and math and a School Ability Test. Middle and Upper School applicants will also complete a writing assignment. School Visits
School visits for preschool students will be scheduled individually so that teachers may observe the child’s readiness skills in a classroom setting. Parents do not stay for the classroom visit. Student who are offered enrollment contracts for 2022-2023 will be personally invited to participate in our Schoolwide Shadowing Day in the Spring of 2022.
Contracts
The Admissions Committee will review and evaluate the application materials and tests of all applicants. Those who meet the criteria for admission will be offered a contract provided openings are available. Priority will be given to qualified siblings and children of alumni. In situations where there are no openings, qualified applicants’ names will be placed in a waiting pool to be considered for the next opening. Admission will be offered to applicants in the waiting pool as openings become available. Openings may occur at any time during the year. Contracts for new applicants will be issued after currently enrolled students have completed the re-enrollment process. Parents will be notified of openings as they become available.
