Raider of the Quarter (1st Quarter) 2019-2020 – Middle School

Sims Mendheim – NJHS member speaking…

Good afternoon.  My name is Sims Mendheim and I am a member of the NJHS Executive Team. The National Junior Honor Society created the “Raider of the Quarter” program during the 2018-19 school year to honor students’ success inside and outside of the classroom. At the end of each Quarter, NJHS will honor Middle and Upper School students that demonstrates one or more of the four pillars of NJHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and citizenship. The recipients of this award have been nominated and voted on by the faculty at Houston Academy.  I would like to introduce freshmen Nadia Soifer and Griffin McGee that will assist me in introducing the recipients of the NJHS Students of the Quarter.

Mary Lawrence Lee – 5th Grade

The first recipient for the 5th grade for the Raider of the Quarter Award is..

Mary Lawrence Lee. In Mrs. Savoy’s words, “Mary Lawrence Lee meets all of the four pillars. She is respectable and kind to other students. She does excellent work in the classroom and at home. She is a very conscientious student who strives for excellence in everything she does, and is a leader among her peers.” Congratulations, Mary Lawrence!

 Megan Harman – 6th grade

The 6th grade Raider of the Quarter is Megan Harman. In Mrs. Cromer’s words “Megan Harman is an excellent role model. Megan always comes to class prepared and ready to learn. She is kind and respectful to her classmates and teachers. Megan puts in a lot of hard work and effort to ensure she makes excellent grades. Megan deserves this award because she is an all-around excellent student!” Congratulations, Megan!

Alina Soifer  – 7th grade

In 7th grade we had a tie. The co-recipient of the 7th grade Raider of the Quarter is awarded to…. Alina Soifer. In Mrs. Wilder’s words, “Alina is always enthusiastic in class and loves to learn. She is also very kind to her classmates. She encourages them with cheers and makes them laugh. She creates inside jokes that everyone is included in. She also encourages me as a teacher. She accepts everyone just as they are and has a welcoming spirit.” In Mrs. Griffin’s words, “Alina shows maturity and leadership on a daily basis in drama class. She is a positive leader among her peers by being encouraging and willing to try anything. She also showed great service and dedication to the drama department during the US musical Bye Bye Birdie. She volunteered to work backstage during the production and came to every rehearsal whether she was called or not. She went above and beyond to help in any capacity that she could.” Congratulations, Alina!

Meredith Williams – 7th grade

The co-recipient of the 7th grade Raider of the Quarter is awarded to…. Meredith Williams. In Mrs. Blumberg’s words, “Meredith exemplifies the qualities of the NJHS Raider of the quarter in that she is always responsible, polite, and prepared. Not only is she industrious, she is also kind to others and willing to lend a helping hand wherever there’s a need. Meredith is a genuine person who is always sure to brighten anyone’s day.” Congratulations, Meredith!

Palmer Howell – 8th grade

The first recipient for the 8th grade for the Raider of the Quarter Award is.. Palmer Howell. In Coach Whigham’s words, “Palmer is a very determined student. She consistently works in her courses until she fully understands and masters the material. She always does her work, and genuinely wants to understand her work, not just complete the material for a grade. Having her in my class makes me strive to be a better teacher.” In the words of Mrs. Gray, “Palmer exemplifies all pillars of the NJHS, but the one that is the most impressive to me is her character. I have witnessed several occasions where Palmer has extended kindness to her classmates to help them feel included. Her character is top-notch and one we should all strive to learn from.” Congratulations, Palmer!

Closing: Griffin McGee speaking…

Thank you and congratulations to all of the students that were recognized today as NJHS Raiders of the Quarter.  In addition to this initiative to promote scholarship, NJHS will be organizing two important events that we invite the community to participate in the future.  One of these events is the NJHS Car Wash on Saturday October 26th from 10:00AM to 12:00 PM. The second event is a COIN WAR Fundraiser that will occur between October 28th to November 1st.  Please support these two important events and assist us to continue to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.
