HA 7th graders enjoy Bonding Experience at Butter and Egg Adventures

Mrs. Cheryl Walker is the Middle School counselor at Houston Academy. Mrs. Walker started this tradition a year ago for HA 7th graders to attend the Bonding Experience held at Butter and Egg Adventures in Troy, Alabama. “7th grade year at HA is usually a time when we enroll a good number of new students,” Mrs. Walker said. “The ‘bonding experience’ is designed to bring all the students together in a more relaxed atmosphere. It is a time where the students get to interact with each other and develop closer relationships outside of a classroom environment.”

Butter and Egg Adventures offers a variety of activities. One of the activities the students participate in was team building. “By working with their peers to achieve a goal in a fun, non-classroom setting, teens can learn how to work better with others, improve their communication skills and exercise their creative thinking,” Mrs. Walker said. “Some of the games played helped the students recognize leadership qualities. They learn how to listen to input from other team members, and exercise their problem-solving skills.”

This was the second year HA held this program and it was very successful again. “It makes me proud to see students making a connection to their classmates and learning new things about each other,” Mrs. Walker said. “They are developing relationships and creating memories that hopefully will prove to be meaningful for years to come.”

Some of the 7th grade students had very positive things to say about the program. “I got out of my clique and made new friends,” JT Pitchford said. “I had a lot of fun.” Another 7th grader who attended was Sims Mendheim. “The team building activities brought us closer together,” Mendheim said. Alex Swanson felt it was a good bonding experience as well. “I feel like I made new friends,” Swanson said. “I felt I got closer to the friends I already had too.”
