Many thanks to all who participated in HA’s Relay for Life on Friday! We raised over $11,000 to continue the fight against cancer! See photos from the event below.
A special thank-you to our generous sponsors: Cox Pools, Bondy’s Automotive, Yellow Branch, Johnston Hinesley, P.C., Troy Bank & Trust, Wiregrass Orthodontic Specialists, AAA Cooper Transportation, and Tom West Company (Charles D. Buntin).
The 1st Annual Relay for Life event will be held at Houston Academy on Friday, April 21st from 7:00pm – 10:00pm. ALL grades are invited to come out along with their families on Friday night!
Following the Opening Ceremony at 7:00pm, we will kick off the event with our “Survivor Lap”. This is only a couple of laps around the field and your child can walk for someone or you may be a survivor yourself. We would love to have as many survivors walking as we can to honor you! This is a time to celebrate the courage it takes to fight cancer. Everyone surrounds the field as we applaud and cheer for the survivor’s courage and in support of loved ones battling cancer! Caregivers are also honored with laps at this time, and teams can walk together in a “Team Lap”.
At 8:00pm, there will be a carnival including inflatables, bungee jumps, food, cotton candy, popcorn and games to celebrate survivors.
At 9:00pm, the lights will be shut off and the candle-lit luminaries will line the field for our Luminaria Ceremony, “walk to remember”. This is a very powerful and meaningful walk as loved ones names are called out as the kids walk around the track in memory of a loved one. Please encourage your child to make a sign to hold up or or name tag to put on their shirt to honor the person who they are walking for. The event will close with a “Fight Back Pledge” and Closing Ceremony.
The lower school is making banners for the field and the winners will be announced Friday night along with the class that raises the most money. First place gets a pizza party at school! We will have a leaderboard up every day this week on the digital sign outside the school with the classes who have raised the most money (LS) or individuals who have met their goals (MS/US), so be sure to purchase your luminaries and torches today! Forms are available on this page and in the office. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society, so let’s all come together as an HA family to support this very worthwhile organization!
