The purpose of the Houston Academy Rescue Team (H.A.R.T.) is to help find ways to support the homeless pets in our area, to encourage adoptions by providing assistance in animal training, animal socialization and adopt-a-thon events, and to raise public awareness through education.
Community Service Project
H.A.R.T. Club members help with Wiregrass Humane Society Adopt-a-thons, visit the Humane Society shelter, sell Best Pets of the Wiregrass calendars, contribute items for Second Chance Thrift Shop, and design Humane Society's booth at the National Peanut Festival. All projects help to support the shelter animals in the Dothan area.
School Service Project
At least once a year, H.A.R.T. is called upon to deal with a lost pet here on the H.A. campus. The club has tracked down owners by researching rabies tag information and returned dogs and cats to their homes if possible.
About four years ago, a black lab wandered in to Mrs. Webber's classroom. Dothan's Animal Services was called to pick him up. After a week of waiting in the city shelter, "Gabe" was invited to join Mrs. Webber's labs in Slocomb. Gabe has been the unofficial mascot of H.A.R.T ever since.
