As a part of the meteorology unit, 8th grade earth science students recently studied convection using 50-foot solar balloons. First, air was trapped in the balloons. As the sun heated the air, the molecules bounced around faster and spread out, making the balloons less dense than the cooler air around them. It was important for students to keep their balloons tethered. A runaway balloon could be detected by radar!
