All students must carry a load of six units of work. Each student must complete 6 units each year to advance to the next grade level. Only one unit can be made up in an accredited summer school prior to the next academic year. A student may earn a summer credit only one time. Any deviations from these guidelines must be approved by the Head of the Upper School.

Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.00 in academic classes to be promoted to the next grade. Students who do not complete the year with a 2.00 must attend summer school to bring up the GPA to the required 2.00. They will then be conditionally promoted to the next grade. Those who do not have a 2.00 GPA at the end of the probationary year will not be allowed to return to Houston Academy. Students must begin each year with a minimum 2.00 GPA and can only go to summer school one time. Students entering their senior year must have a 2.00 cumulative GPA to continue Houston Academy and must maintain that GPA to graduate. Seniors must have a 3.75 GPA to graduate with honors. A student must attend Houston Academy two years before he can be eligible to graduate with honors.
