May 11, 2017

What is Interlochen? What does this summer camp mean to you?

Interlochen is THE premier performing arts boarding high school in the country, located in Interlochen, Michigan. It is well known in this country and the rest of the world because of the level of training it provides. This seven week long summer camp means a lot to me because it the best way I could possibly push myself further and create invaluable connections in the musical theater industry which will propel my career.

How has your experience at Houston Academy prepared you for this opportunity?

Houston Academy has taught me how to handle a life with my theater. It would be so easy for me to wake up every morning to go to the theater, work hard, come back home, and sleep, but the rigorous academics that Houston Academy offers force me to learn what I need to and not just what I want. This undoubtedly helps me become a more well-rounded actor which helps much in times like these.

What extra-curricular activities are you involved in? How do they benefit you?

My primary out-of-school activity is… you guessed it… Acting! I am greatly involved with Spark Theater Company here in Dothan. Spark has taught me most all I know about performing, so I would recommend their classes to anyone who wants to learn about theater or wants to have fun! Next to theater, juggling is my pastime of choice. I pride myself much in the art of keeping large numbers of objects in the air at a time, and because of this, my resume has a very strong boost depending on the situation.

What advice would you give to a younger student who is looking to stand out in upper school and beyond?

Find your “thing,” something you can be passionate about. It is so easy to conform to whatever is the norm, but if you have a hobby, be it anything from drawing to working out, you will not only find yourself, but you will also become more proficient in the rest of your life as long as you have a drive to wake up in the morning to do what you love.
